- 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 tablespoon ground ginger
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Royal icing for decorating (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt. Set it aside.
- In another bowl, beat the softened butter and brown sugar together until creamy. Add the molasses, egg, and vanilla extract, mixing until well combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring until the dough comes together. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight for better flavor.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Once chilled, roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes and place them on the prepared baking sheets.
